Son Interview
Why did you
choose
to expose
your work ?

I initially chose Instagram to expose my work because I like that it is very visual and image-focused. It is like a visual portfolio when people land on your profile.
Nowadays, social networks are really present and powerful, how that influence your work ? Can you see a difference since your beginning ?

When I first started, Artfully Awear was a very personal project and I don’t think I really understood the best way to share or talk about it. Through posting it on social media, it allowed me to find a community around shared interests and discover other people who are interested in wearable art or inspired by art in various ways. It has also been a lot of fun to share my process with others, by answering questions about how I’ve created a piece or what types of paint and supplies I use. I love that people can come to my page and be inspired to create something of their own.
Where do you find your inspirations ?
Inspiration comes from everywhere, but I am continuously inspired by artwork in museums, galleries, and artists’ studios; travel (especially to other countries where the clothing style is different than the US); and flora (I absolutely love botanical gardens).
Instagram is the place where I share only things related to art,
On your blog you describe yourself with this sentence: "Ariel Adkins’s mission is to be a living work of art each day. ", what does it mean to you?
To me, bing a living work of art each day means that I try to express myself through my clothing, style, and mood every day. Some days it is easier than others, but it is a mindset that I try to keep. It helps me to stay inspired and challenge myself to create something new all the time.
How do you categorize your content ? Because you describe your work in a more precise way on instagram but on twitter you show us a different content.
Instagram is the place where I share only things related to art, whether other people’s or my own. I use it to engage with the art world specifically. I use Twitter more as a place to share more broad ideas and to engage with conversations around diverse topics, including current events – it is not limited to art content.

We have seen a lot of your works collaborated with partnership. Do you ask to collaborate with museums or did they come to you ?
It goes both ways. Sometimes museums reach out to me and let me know about a new exhibition or opportunity to work together. Other times, I just feel inspired and do it on my own!

We want to talk about the notion of art but in your case there are two different artworks : the clothe (created by you) and the photo on Instagram. So we would like to know if you take the picture by yourself or if you hire a photographer.
Thank you for noticing that both the garment and the photo are artworks! I have never hired a photographer for any of my photos, but I am lucky that my boyfriend and other friends are good

Do you sell your works ? We saw that you did a collaboration with Miljan Suknovic and sold a few of your work. Except that, we didn’t find that you sold your other art works.
I still own almost all of the pieces that are pictured on my Instagram – they are part of the Artfully Awear Museum (my closet). JI have done a few limited edition collections in the past, such as the one with Miljan Suknovic, but on the whole it is not something that I have pursued as much. As far as monetizing my work, I am able to create partnerships with companies and brands from time to time that will provide payment for a special creation.

photographers. JA few times, I’ve even asked someone I don’t know, like another museum visitor to take the photo.
